Sarah Engle Lawrence died June 9, 2023 in Sutter Creek, California. She was born March 9, 1935 in Lansing, Michigan to Dr. Paul H. and Ruth Beecher Engle of Olivet, Michigan. Sarah grew up with her three sisters in Olivet, and attended Olivet College, graduating in 1956 with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. At Olivet, she met Robert "Berry" Lawrence to whom she was married for 64 years before his death in 2020. They lived on Grosse Ile from 1976 to 2000.
Sarah loved all things historical, serving on the Board of the Grosse Ile Historical Society. As a member of the Historical Society, she shepherded the massive project of publishing a book through Arcadia Publishing, The Images of Grosse Ile, which showcases many images from our archival collections. She also worked at the Ford Archives and was then hired as the Chief Registrar at the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Michigan. There she was recognized as a gifted leader and talented and dedicated professional for more than 10 years.
She is survived by her sisters, Mary Hauss of Redding, California and Martha Metzger of Portland, Oregon, her children, Scott (Mary) Lawrence of St. Ann, Missouri, Susan (Doug) McElwee of Jackson, California and Timothy (Dawn) Lawrence of Canton, Michigan, 7 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Robert, and her sister, Susan Sydnor of Pueblo, Colorado.
A Memorial for Sarah Engle Lawrence and Robert Mayberry Lawrence will be held at the Olivet Congregational Church in Olivet, Michigan at 10:30am on October 14, 2023.
